Thursday 26th March

Greetings all, I hope you’ve had a good day. It is so nice to see the sun continuing to shine.

The theme for my blog today is reading. I absolutely love to read for many reasons: it helps me to relax; I can extend my knowledge about things; I can use my imagination; it can take me to new worlds; I learn new words; I can experience a range of emotions; it gives me ideas - the list is endless and I really do get excited about reading a new book. Did you know that Miss Thacker likes the smell of new books? She is often the first to open the new books that arrive in school, and she flicks through the pages so the smell wafts up her nose.

I know that lots of you took a variety of books home from school last week, I hope you are enjoying reading them. We would be delighted to hear about the books you have been reading, send your book reviews to children@olive.dudley.sch.uk - we can then display your review in your phase library, to share with everyone when we are back in school. In addition, you may fancy being an author yourself. Why not use this time at home to write a story, if you do, remember to email us a copy.

Many of the school staff have been reading at home, both their own books and books with their children. I am currently reading a time shift novel - the plot is super complicated and I am having to really concentrate on the different elements of the text. Mrs Waters is reading The Hobbit by J R Tolkien - the rest of us couldn’t believe she hadn’t read it before. Miss Homer is reading Harry Potter and Mrs Higgins is reading two books at the same time, do you any of you do that?. Mrs Copson is reading Holes by Louis Sacher with her twins (I would recommend this book to our children in year six). Miss Best is reading Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver, which is all about a young boy growing up during the stone age. Miss Jenkins is reading Grandpas Great Escape by David Walliams (I bet some of you have read it). Miss Raphael, Miss Wajid, Miss Cooper, Miss Grice, Mrs Dudley, Miss Richardson, Miss Thacker and Mr Holder are all reading adult books that your parents might enjoy. Mrs Birch’s son is reading Penguin Pandemonium by Jeanne Wilson and Miss Hackett’s daughter is working her way through her Julia Donaldson collection - A Squash and a Squeeze is her favourite; Mrs Waldron’s son also likes Julia and his favourite is Zog. Miss Shinner’s son is enjoying the Oliver Jeffers collection and Mr Priest’s daughter loves Peck, Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins. Mrs Marriott is reading the Heroes of Olympus books by Rick Riordan and Mrs Parker and her son have just finished Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. Mrs Sheasby’s daughter likes Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell and my niece is currently reading The Creakers by Tom Fletcher. Have you read any of these books?

Mr Priest has suggested the following for those of you who enjoy reading as much as we do:

  • a list of book recommendations can be found at: www.booktrust.org.uk

  • Dudley libraries have ebooks for members.

We are all missing you so much and finding our new daily lives a little bit strange. Parents and carers, we hope that you are well also - we miss you as well. Not a day goes by where we don’t think about you, we want to know how you are, what you’ve been doing and how you have been looking after your parents (this is important).

Stay safe all.
