Friday 27th March

Happy Friday!

Did you hear the clapping last night? Did you stand in your window or on your doorstop? Were you a part of that moment in history?

At 8pm yesterday evening many people, across the whole of the United Kingdom, stood at their windows or on their doorsteps to show their support for the NHS and other key workers in our fight against Covid-19. People were encouraged to clap, bang saucepans and make as much noise as possible - in some neighbourhoods they even had fireworks. It was a moment for the whole country to unite at this difficult time.

I stood on my doorstep and clapped. It was a really moving moment and I am really proud of the NHS and all the key workers who are supporting the population today and every day. I had lots of messages from the staff at Olive Hill who had also stood on their doorsteps to show their support.

As school staff, we are classed as key workers and the staff of Olive Hill have been as incredible as ever. I feel very lucky to have such a supportive team - all of your teachers, teaching assistants and other adults have had to remain calm and steady, they have kept the school going, they have been called into briefings, they have had lots of new instructions and through all of this they have continued to put you, our wonderful children, first.

Do you know any key workers? If you do, make them smile and tell them how proud you are of their commitment to our country.

We know about the past because people have written about it and the written word has been read by many, passed down through the years. I would like you to write a poem about last night, about the moment everyone stood on their doorsteps to show their support for our wonderful key workers. Do you think you could do that? Have a go and send your poems to children@olive.dudley.sch.uk.

The people stood, the people clapped, the people cheered, the people smiled, the people cried.

In the darkness they did unite. Miss Grasby

The world came together as people stayed apart, to show their support for NHS staff caring with their heart, people clapped and they cheered, and bright showers of fireworks appeared, it warmed people’s hearts and some shed a tear, to know that people care, far and near. Miss Best

As a staff team, we would like to clap our children to say thank you for making us smile everyday.

Stay safe. We miss you.
