Friday 24th November

Happy Friday!

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful week. As always, the week has gone very fast and there has been lots going on across the school. Earlier in the week I showed a visitor around the school and they were super impressed with the calm behaviour displayed in the classrooms, corridors and on the playground. He spoke about the deliberate calmness of all the adults and how this was role modelled to the children and as a result they were also very calm. Having a calm atmosphere is a really important part of us all feeling safe - well done Olive Hill! Stay calm and keep learning!

On Wednesday we had a very important virtual assembly, delivered by some of our year six children. A group of eight children each delivered a fantastic speech explaining why they should become a school prefect. Following their speeches, the whole school got to vote for the children they felt would best represent the school. We now have four prefects and four vice prefects. They each gave a very passionate speech about themselves and what they would do if they were a prefect - kindness was a key feature, and a desire to support the younger children of Olive Hill. It was amazing to see the confidence they had when presenting their ideas - oracy is a huge part of our curriculum here at Olive Hill and it was great to see the positive outcomes in action. A huge thank you to all the children who put themselves forward for the prefect position, we are exceptionally proud of you all.

It appears that we have some aspiring playground designers in Magnolia Class (year four). Thanks to the the generosity of one of our grandparents, we have a lot of Meccano available in school and this is fantastic for considering how designs work. Today, the children went outside to study the structure of the playground equipment. When they returned to the classroom, they used what they had learnt to design their own playground equipment - there were some very exciting designs, complete with swings, climbing ladders and tyre attractions.

Earlier this week, our community police officer delivered a safety talk to our year six children. His talk included many important messages about the importance of keeping safe when in the local community. Miss Walters then followed this up with an assembly looking at different scenarios and what the appropriate actions would be. Talking of police officers, our reception children have been thinking about their dreams this week and many of them would like to be a police officer when they are older.

Families, some future dates for your diaries:

  • Flu vaccinations will be taking place on the 11th October (please make sure you have returned your child’s consent form) ;

  • The school photographer will be visiting on the 21st October (as long as Covid19 restrictions remain the same).

Annual Consent Forms have been sent home with your child today (please check the bottom of bags if you’ve not received it), please can we request that these are completed and sent back into school as soon as possible.

Please remember that children arriving after 8.55am will be marked as late. Attendance at school is compulsory and the children miss out on essential learning when they are not in school.

We hope you all have an enjoyable weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.

Stay safe.
