Friday 17th September

Happy Friday!

We hope you have all had a good week. School life continues to be really busy, all of our year groups, from nursery to year six, are now all in school. Attendance at school is compulsory and it is expected that our children will be in school, on time, every day. If your child is not well enough to attend school then please phone the school office to report their absence. Routine appointments should be made outside of the school day.

So, why a picture of a badger on the blog this week? Mr Weston is very concerned about the number of badgers that are visiting our playground at night. They are digging up our grass and leaving a lot of mess. Mr Patel has set up a camera so we can view their activity over the weekend. Hopefully, we’ll be able to share this with the children next week.

This week, during assembly, we have been discussing the values that top athletes need in order to succeed and linking this to the values we need to be successful learners. We have been so impressed with the contributions from years five and six. Here are just a few of the values they feel are important for a successful learner:

  • cooperative

  • supportive

  • encouraging

  • confidence

  • determined

  • hard working

  • prepared

  • respectful

  • ready

  • self-disciplined

  • humble

  • resilient

  • safe

  • committed

  • focused

  • dedicated

It is great to observe these values in our children each and every day - well done children of Olive Hill!

Year six have had their first swimming session this week. This was enjoyed by most of them. Some have been very honest and admitted that swimming isn’t for them, but they understand why it is important for them to learn to swim so they can be safe around water. We usually take our year four children swimming, however, the Covid19 pandemic has meant that our older children have missed out on an important part of the PE national curriculum - we will now be ensuring that all of our children experience swimming lessons prior to leaving us at the end of year six. Year six have also been thinking about their secondary school choices this week, thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us on Thursday evening to discuss what the process entails. We have enjoyed hearing from the children about their visits to open events.

Reception have painted some wonderful self-portraits this week. They have taken a lot of care when considering their features and they have been thinking carefully about the colour paint they should use. In year one, they have been playing lots of board games to help them understand the importance of taking turns and to consider what it feels like when you win or lose. Year three have now been introduced to the French language and the children are all very keen to greet everyone with a ‘Bonjour’. I need to brush up on my French skills to make sure I can hold a conversation with them as they learn more and more of the language.

This week has flown by! The weekend has arrived in a blink of an eye! We hope you all have a fun weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.

Stay safe.
