Wednesday 1st July
Happy 1st July everybody! July is the seventh month of the year and has 31 days in total. July was named in honour of the Roman general Julius Caesar. If you were born in July, your birthstone is the ruby, and the flower for the month is the water lily. There are two zodiac signs which claim July as their host month - either Cancer (crab), or a Leo (lion). Happy Birthday to anyone who has a birthday in July!
Yesterday, before I was called to a meeting, I was going to tell you about the state of my hair. It is very long at the moment and I have had to dye it a different colour to cover the grey! With hairdressers and barbers soon able to open I am sure lots of people have been very busy booking appointments. What is your hair looking like? Have your home grown-ups cut your hair at all? Have you been using lots of gel to keep it perfectly styled? Or are you happy with the just got out of bed look?
Did you know that there is hair on almost every part of your body? Places that don’t have hair include the lips, the palms of the hands, and the soles of the feet. Some of the hair on your body is easy to see, like your eyebrows and the hair on your head, arms and legs, but other hair, like that on your cheek, is almost invisible.
What is the job of hair? Depending on where the hair is on body it has a different job. The hair on your head keeps your head warm and provides a little cushioning for your skull. Eyelashes protect your eyes by decreasing the amount of light and dust that go into them, and eyebrows protect your eyes from sweat dripping down your forehead.
Where does hair come from? All hair rises out of the skin in the same way. It starts at the hair root, a place beneath your skin where cells band together. The root is inside a follicle. which is like a small tube in the skin. As the hair begins to grow, it pushes up from the root and out of the follicle, through the skin where it can be seen. Once the hair is at the skin’s surface, the cells within the strand of hair aren’t alive anymore. The hair you see on every part of your body contains dead cells. That is why it doesn’t cause any pain when someone cuts your hair. However, if you someone pulls your hair it will cause a lot of pain!
Why does my hair sometimes look greasy? Nearly every hair follicle is attached to a sebaceous gland, which is sometimes called an oil gland. These glands produce oil, which makes the hair shiny and a bit waterproof. It they pump out too much oil your hair may look greasy. If that happens, you need to wash it!
Did you know that you have more than 100,000 hairs on your head! But you lose some every day. About 50 to 100 hairs fall out each day. But don’t worry, new hairs are constantly replacing those that have fallen out at your age.
Usually, your hair colour is determined by one or both parents’ hair colour. When I was a lot younger I had very blonde hair. My hair also has a wave in it, it is not curly but it isn’t straight either.
It is super important to keep your hair clean - even when in lockdown! Another great way to healthy looking hair is to eat a healthy diet.
Fingers crossed that I will be able to get an appointment with the hairdresser when they open. I want to be looking my best for your return in September. I am sure that many of you will also have a hair cut before returning.
Enjoy the rest of your day. We miss you. Stay safe.
