Friday 26th March
Happy Friday to all of families!
It’s Mr Priest here as a guest contributor to this week’s blog.
Last weekend, we officially welcomed spring and since we seem to have experienced every seasons’ weather in one week - we even had hail stones at the end of the day today! As ever, it has been busy in school and the children have been involved in lots of exciting learning.
Our nursery children have enjoyed reading the modern classic Handa’s Surprise – a funny story with beautiful illustrations set in Kenya. The book has inspired some wonderful African necklaces which the children have made and painted.
In reception, the children have been reading one of my daughter’s favourite books: Zog by Julia Donaldson. The children have been awarded Zog’s Golden Stars for showing kindness to each other – when I popped into Reception earlier this week the children had demonstrated so much kindness they’d run out of golden stars and the staff were busy preparing more!
Year one staff have been looking for the next Shefali. The children have been working on producing weather reports and the week’s changing weather will have certainly kept the meteorologists guessing. The classes are using green screen technology to film their reports, just like a real TV studio! They tell me it will dry up over the weekend. Let’s hope they’re right!
Year two are reading a book by my favourite childhood author: Roald Dahl. I had the privilege of reading a chapter of George’s Marvellous Medicine with Hawthorn Class last week - George’s grandma always makes us giggle! The children are now working on producing radio adverts for George’s invention.
Year three have been learning all about the world’s highest mountain – Everest. We thought it was windy on the school carpark this morning as lots of umbrellas were turning inside-out in the gusts but on Everest wind speeds of over 100mph are common and can blow climbers off the mountain!
Year 4 have been on a special visit this afternoon – they have visited parliament from the comfort of their own classroom. They completed a virtual tour of parliament and had a special guest speaker via video link to speak to them about parliament and allow them to ask questions.
In year 5, the children had great fun investigating air resistance. They designed and made parachutes to help an egg land safely after being dropped from a height. Some eggs survived the drop and others came to a messy end on the floor.
Year 6 have continued their learning all about ancient civilisations in history. They have been reading Percy Jackson stories this term which are all related to Greek mythology. This week, they experienced a blind-fold walk through the Minotaur’s labyrinth as they prepare to retell the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.
We look forward to seeing you on Monday for the final week of the spring term, breaking up for the Easter holidays on Thursday 1st April.
Have a lovely weekend.
